Poor Mans Line Amplifier
My buddy Chan, a Singaporean accredited wood craftsman assigned working in Indonesia, approached me exploring the possibility of a very budged-costed tube line-amplifier.
Budget/ expenditures should not exceed US$250. This is a real challenge and I struck an deal with him that we both work together. He devised the timber chassis and I'll do the rest.
The tube topology is a simple SRPP with economy-class parts. Custom wound mains transformer and one choke, MKP caps, metal oxide resistors, Russian PIO coupling and output caps, a 100K ALPS Blue volume pot, Cat6 left-over cables from my office network backbone.
We expressly saved money where we can to allow us to go for the best tubes the saving can buy . Which we succeed in getting one Valvo AZ1 baloon meshplate and a pair of RCA milspek 6SN7.
The exercise proved that we can indeed build a good decent quality tube line amplifier without going over the top in costs.
