Uploud mk1

This project was done during winter 2009/2010. My aim was to design aesthetically original, beautiful and functional loudspeaker, that doesn't have to be ashamed of performance either. Used drivers were 71/2" bass-midrange (C180-8-94) and 1" ceramic dome (C25-6-12) by Accuton. Cabinet volume is about 16 litres and tuned to 44 Hz with 240 mm long rectangular tube. Hypex plateamp AS2.100 was chosen due to its flexibility, sound quality and compact size.

Cabinet was built of milled layers of solid Finnish birch plywood. Each cabinet took roughly one full sheet of 21 mm thick material, totalling 42 layers glued in one heavy "cake". CNC router was used to dimension the pieces precisely and plot holes for assembly rods.

Surface finishing is seven layers of glossy furniture lacquer sanded up to grit of 12000 on MicroMesh scale. Speaker legs are 7 mm solid steel slab welded and painted.

I'll upload more pictures as I get some reasonable ones taken.

  • Sorry for terrible picture quality but these will have to do for now. I´ll try to get decent pictures when good studio gear is available.

Some finishing touches such as acrylic cover over the volume keypad seem to be a long time coming since nobody normally gets to see those parts. The two topmost pictures are from DIY event in Helsinki where the speakers got their first public appearance. As you can see it´s possible to stuff million wires to the amp, but in normal circumstances you´ll get along with just the digital cables and power cord.

The speakers change dramatically in different ****es and tend to sound way too bright in rooms with no absorbing materials. Accuton drivers have even power distribution pattern and they produce stereo image to wider area than speakers with waveguides. While using digital input is a norm with these, good quality analog source sounds very good which indicates that AD conversion is decent quality. Only thing I miss in that amp is that it doesn´t have manual input selector which kinda sucks.

Anyways, these were my first speakers ever built and I´m very happy with the overall results. Stay tuned, there will be further development versions still coming ;)

  • Oh please moderators, Analog shouldn´t be in the naughty words list :) You´re filters are hyperactive...

  • Sorry Tuakko, you're right. Filtering was a little extreme. I've edited it now to be a little more forgiving :)
