Isoturn

This turntable was my first hi-fi project. At the time I could not imagine building a tone arm, so I bought a Linn Basic tone arm and started with some technical drawings for the chassis in order to determine the correct spot for the tone arm.

After finishing the drawings, the chassis was milled from MDF board and spray painted gloss black by a professional company. The chassis is suspended on spiral springs. The main bearing is the most critical part of a turntable. The bearing is held in a steel ring and can be adjusted in its height. It was made of a thick steel shaft on a lathe. Bronze bushes were pressed in and reamed to exact roundness and tolerances. The axle I made from an 8 mm diameter high speed steel miller blank.

The collet for the turntable was heat shrinked onto the axle. The lower end face of the axle rests on a small steel ball of a dissect ball bearing which is located in the center of the steel end cap.

The turntable itself weighs 6.9 kg (15.211 pound lbs) and is made of aluminum with an acrylic glass top. It is driven by a round rubber belt and a synchronous motor. The motor is suspended by rubber bands for decoupling and it is unregulated. Stainless steel tubing was used to make the housing of the transformer and switch, as well as for the motor housing and the spring housings. My choice of cartridge is Benz Micro MC Gold.
