PhonoDude

Phonodude is an Phono pre-amp with vacuum tubes including the rectifier.

The electric diagram is made by TriodeDick.com.

Building the pre-amp.
---------------------

I wanted to make the amp "old style" with a "modern touch".

Both Audio and Power Supply have the same sizes. Wooden frame is glued together and stained with a brown dark color. In combination with the Sandblased metal parts ( and sprayed with Plastik Spray ) gives a fresh classy look.

The power supply has also a tube(rectifier).
I didn't want to put the tube outside. Since it was the only one it looked a bit trashy. I decided to put the tube inside and placed horizontal.
Ofcourse a tube gets hot and provided the under and upper metal sheet this "honey comb mesh" thing from an old PC Power Supply. ( Inspired by an old Sonic the Hedgehog game and it looked very nice if i may say :D )

I also used a switch at the backside from the Audio unit. So i can choose how many voltage the tube Heater wil gets.
So i can choose ECC83 ( 12volt when both heaters are in serial) or the russian equivelant 6N2P( wich only is 6 volts).
By using the same pins.

Problems when Building:
----------------------
While building ive knocked my head many times. Biggest problem was the lack of space.

Since i didn't got many space in the Power Supply i had to cut some wood from the frame so a Capacitor would fit in. ( see picture with the big transformer and look in the upper right )

And the voltage regulator for the fillament gets VERY HOT ! So i provid it with a cooling sink.

  • Great work!

Elegant yet simple. It’s always a pleasure to see DIY-HiFi build with a personal design.

I’m about to build my own PhonoDude in Hammond-Enclosures and a more ‘raw industrial’ design. But seeing your version made me think about elegance.

What did you use for the umbilical-interconnect?
